Have heard a bit about the $20 tip at check in to nab a room upgrade.
Does it woek and how do you do it.
We are from Oz and not sure on tipping ettiquette but keen to try it.
Do we just pass over a $20 note when we check in to whoever serves us and how do we know if they have just pocketed the dough and not upgraded us????
Any tips guys (no pun intended)

$20 room upgrade
Try this site http://www.frontdesktip.com ; some good info there . The guy getting accused of bribery and getting thrown out by security souunds a little OTT.
tried that site and one of the posters said he got thrown out for offering the tip for an upgrade at Bellagio.
Dont want to come all the way from oz to get the boot.
scoop - you won%26#39;t get thrown out, it is fine. We did that at Bellagio and got a nice upgrade (I know, it%26#39;s true, we may have gotten one just by asking; but we DID get an upgrade to lakeview by offering the $20.) Anyway, it is not a problem, the manager was standing right there and he and the clerk were very friendly, he even reminded the clerk to give us a line pass for the buffet.
I saw that comment on frontdesktip.com too, but that%26#39;s such a small percentage of people. If that did happen by any chance (which I highly doubt), you would just need to speak to a manager (or senior manager) and explain that you were tipping for the front desk person%26#39;s great service and had merely asked if any complimentary upgrades were available, that your tip was in no way intended as a bribe. Good luck!
The $20 bribe does not work.
Just back from week at Palazzo and although the standard suites are great we thought we wold just ask about upgrade...nothing ventured etc!!!
Upgrade given, no $20 required, just politeness
Ask, you have nothing to lose
I have a feeling the one about the Bellagio and getting thrown out is either bogus or the guy was extremely rude and got out of line. Vegas is kickback city and practically all of the hotels allow their desk clerks the discretion to give the complimentary upgrade if the hotel is not fully booked. A co-worker tells me that the way they do it is simply ask if there is any way they can get a free upgrade and say it%26#39;s their birthday or anniversary and if they decline then they flash the money at them. Most of the time they don%26#39;t even have to pay for the upgrade but still tip generously if they do get it.
The post about someone getting thrown out at Bellagio was from some bitter front desk clerk that hacked the sited a while back.

There is the similar post at the venetian and other hotels.
