Trip Report Harrah's 4/19-4/21
Hi, everyone...I have been to Vegas three times before, but this was my first time center-strip and the first time with my mom (I%26#39;m 33, she%26#39;s 53). We had a great time. Here are the hightlights, and I apologize for the length in advance.
Transportation: Took a 6am flight from Seattle direct to LV. This was a bit awful for me as I had to be to the airport by 4:30am (I usually sleep until about 9:30!). Flight was uneventful and on time. Arrived in LV approximately 8:30am.
Mom and I only packed carry-ons, so it was right out to the taxi line. I debated about whether to ask the driver to take a particular route, but decided to just be friendly and see if he would pay me back by not tunneling us! Turns out he was a good sort. I think it was about $17 or so with tip. We took the monorail around and I didn%26#39;t find the stops to be as far from the casinos as some say. That is, with the exception of MGM! We also took some taxis to get around (when we got too tired or tipsy) and found them to be reasonable.
Hotel: Arrived at Harrah%26#39;s and attempted to check in. They said they%26#39;d have a room available in about two hours. Not a problem. When we received our keys we realized that we got exactly what we booked (2 queens, non-smoking, high floor with safe in room). It was not the Wynn, but we were pleased. We did have a little maintenance issue (clogged sink and shower) but it was taken care of promptly while we were out for the day. I liked staying at Harrah%26#39;s for the location, but I have to say the casino was not my favorite. The pool was nothing to write home about, and my feelings about it were enhanced by the fact that I twisted my ankle on the wet pool deck about 20 minutes after getting there. I was so afraid it would swell and I%26#39;d have to ride a ';rascal'; all weekend! We iced it up and it ended up being tender, but fine to walk on. Phew!
Meals: We ate breakfast at the Cafe at Harrah%26#39;s each morning. The pancakes we had were surprisingly good and mom enjoyed her french toast. Also, the sausage and bacon were delicious.
We ate lunch at BK at O%26#39;Shea%26#39;s (it was a BK!), and lunch the other two days at Mon Ami Gabi. We loved the onion soup and had delicious Kir Royales as well. The steak sandwich was nothing special, IMHO.
For dinner we ate first at Corsa Cucina and the following day at The Range Steakhouse. Both meals were delicious! We split the buffalo mozzarella appetizer at Corsa. Mom had the Cavatelli with game hen (she liked it) and I had the Rigatoni with Meatballs (I loved their meatballs on a previous visit). We really enjoyed to food, and the service was good, but our waiter was not the most personable. At The Range we had great service and delicious meals. I had the filet mignon and mom the prime rib. Mine was wonderful, and she said it was the best prime rib she%26#39;d ever had. She also loved her au gratin potatoes, but my mashed potatoes were not great. They tasted a little like instant (although the lumps proved they weren%26#39;t).
Gambling: I did not feel in the mood for table games this time, so I stuck to slots and video poker. This was my first foray into video poker (I had previously only played online), and I did alright. I was disappointed with Harrah%26#39;s selection of Wheel of Fortune machines (my favorite...I know, I%26#39;m a sucker). They only had two small banks of them, one for $1 and one for 25 cents. The 25 cents one were the five coin max, not my usual three. I had no luck at either the dollar or 25 cent ones. I actually got into the penny slots this time and got good play on Gold Fish (a lot of bonuses) and something with mermaids (Mermaids Gold?). I also enjoyed the big Wheel of Fortune machine at Paris. We ended up playing a lot at Paris as we really liked the casino. We also played a bit at NY NY, the Sahara (liked the Sopranos). I usually hit the casino with my mom and then walked her back to the room when she started to fade. Made it up until about 1:30 the first night and then about 5:30am the second. Was feeling a little haggard Monday morning!
Entertainment: We hung out at some of the casino bars and found them to be fun. By far, the best entertainment portion of the trip was seeing LOVE. I absolutely adored it! I expected to like it as I grew up on the music of the Beatles. My aunt is a huuuuge fan and I basically heard them from the time I was in the womb. What I didn%26#39;t expect was that I would be so incredibly moved. I cried, I laughed and did both at the same time. Definitely a must-see!
Cons: Harrahs was a little busy for me. I think I would prefer to stay a little further outside of the mayhem of the center strip area and just take a cab around when I want the excitement. We%26#39;ve stayed at the Strat before and I like the feel there a little more than Harrah%26#39;s (I also like the casino better). I would really like to stay somewhere like Wynn, which is more subdued, but also more upscale than my ghetto Strat!
Pros: Everything else, especially LOVE! I cannot say enough about that show. I can%26#39;t wait to see it again. Also, this was my first trip with my mom. It was nice to have a girlie bonding trip with her. It is something we will always remember. We%26#39;ve already decided that our next girls trip will be to New Orleans!
One more thing...I didn%26#39;t really win anything to speak of but I got great playing time (all I really care about). Also, I came home with about 1/2 of my gambling budget intact. I call that winning!
Nice TR.
If you come back with any money, then its been a great trip.
Great report! Hope mine reads as well when I return. I will also be staying at Harrah%26#39;s. Two Queens, high floor with a safe -- my exact request. Glad you had a good time.
Nice trip report. Sounds like you and mom had a great time.
Great Trip Report. Sounds like you had a good time. I know what you mean about Harrah%26#39;s being a little too busy.
Thanks for posting.
I really enjoyed your TR and your style of writing. It was a very good read.
I never got the chance to make a girls trip with my mom. I have my doubts it would have been a good time if we had taken one together. I appreciate anyone who can make a go of it however.
I like the Strat. I have never stayed there but the slots are pretty good to me. Harrahs is my least favorite strip casino. The only thing I like there is the duelling pianos bar. Now that is fun!! I wish Harrahs hadn%26#39;t taken over so many other strip casinos. I miss the old Vegas more every visit I make.
